Brett Schock, Committee Chair

Brett is a project engineer at Michael Baker Jr., Inc. living in the Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas area with experience in roadway, utility, drainage, structural and airport engineering, as well as experience with transportation and airport planning, environmental documentation and the NEPA process. Brett's project experience includes a range of projects; a 1500' cable-stayed bridge structural design, planning for a $4 billion test Maglev rail project in Pittsburgh, PA, numerous runway extensions at large commercial airports, design of new multi-lane highway projects, water utility relocations for design-build, and EIS document preparation for projects including a 35 mile highway expansion.
Brett received a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from his hometown University of Pittsburgh in 2003, and a Masters of Engineering Management from Robert Morris University in 2005. Brett is a Professional Engineer in the state of Texas and is certified by the American Institute of Certified Planners. Brett lives in Fort Worth, Texas with his wife and their 18-month old son. Brett plays ice hockey and skis, loves to watch the NHL and international soccer, travels the country to ride roller coasters, loves to cook for his family and friends, has run a half-marathon, and dabbles in quantum and astrophysics (in his "down time").

Antonio Massidda, Vice Chair

Antonio has a M.S. in Civil Engineering (2003) and a M.S. in Aviation Science (2005). Currently, he is an Ingram Scholar at Vanderbilt University's Owen Graduate School of Management, where he is pursuing a full-time Master of Business Administration. In the recent past, Antonio worked at The University of Texas at Arlington on aviation and transportation research projects, also cooperating with the Federal Aviation Administration and a NASA research station on NextGen. A native of Italy, Antonio worked as an Assistant Project Manager on the Italian High Speed Rail project.Additional work experience includes highway design, cost estimation and control, and safety.

Antonio joined the T&DI community in 2011, when he presented a paper on airport planning at the Institute's first congress. After that, he was appointed on T&DI's Airport Planning and Operations Committee. Antonio represents the Committee on Younger Members on the aviation council of the Institute. Antonio is very active on the Transportation Research Board: he serves as a member and communications coordinator of the Aircraft/Airport Compatibility Committee (AV070), Aviation Security and Emergency Management (AV090), and as a member of the TRB Standing Committee Communications Coordinator Council. In 2014, Antonio was selected to create and lead a Committee on International Aviation Members of the TRB. Antonio holds a commercial pilot license with instrument and multiengine ratings.

Eileen Velez-Vega, PE

 Eileen M Vélez-Vega, PE is an aviation project manager and Associate for Kimley-Horn and Associates, Inc in West Palm Beach, Florida and managing partner of Kimley-Horn Puerto Rico, LLC. Eileen manages the design and construction of airport pavement rehabilitation projects focusing on constructability and development at both air carrier and general aviation facilities to ensure the continued safe and effective operation of the airports during construction. She has experience in runway, taxiway, apron pavement rehabilitation and construction, LEED certified airport facilities, pavement management programs, and non-destructive pavement testing. She is also an author of more than 16 technical papers and publications. Eileen is also an advocate for sustainable airfield practices.
Before working for KHA, Eileen was a research civil engineer at the US Army Engineer Research and Development Center in Vicksburg, Mississippi where she focused on pavement rehabilitation of concrete pavements and soil stabilization. She obtained her BS in civil engineering from the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez and her MS from Mississippi State University. She is a registered Professional Engineer in Florida and Puerto Rico and is the co-chair of the ASCE T&DI Airfield Pavement Committee and young member of the TRB Flexible Pavement Design and Construction Committee and the Pavement Rehabilitation committee. She has also held national officer positions for the Society of Women Engineers and the Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors Organization of Puerto Rico. Eileen is an active participant and fundraiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Katherine Kortum, P.E., M.ASCE

Katherine Kortum joined the TD&I CYM in October of 2013. She is a Program Officer for the Transportation Research Board, staffing a wide variety of committees on transportation policy and technical activities. She has also served as the International Chair of Young Professionals in Transportation since 2012. Katherine relocated to DC from Austin, where she first worked for the engineering consultants Halff Associates, then returned to graduate school to earn an M.S. and a PhD in transportation engineering at the University of Texas. She is a Professional Engineer in the District of Columbia and a LEED AP, certified in neighborhood design.

Gareth Young

As an inaugural member of the T&DI CYM, Gareth has been a member of the Committee since 2012. Initially selected for a one year term, his term was recently extended for an additional year. Gareth has also recently served on the T&DI Development Task Force and represents the CYM on the T&DI Development Council. With over eight years of experience in design and project management experience, Gareth is a recognized expert in Low Impact Development .
